Tasting notes
The 2020 Etna Rosso San Lorenzo is remarkably pretty, with a perfumed blend of roses and wild strawberries complicated by hints of rubbed sage. There's a lovely inner sweetness up front complemented by textures of pure silk. Energizing acidity propels its crisp red and blue fruits across the palate. Licorice, spice and a zesty twang of sour citrus define the finale, as the 2020 finishes with an abundance of energy and only lightly structured. There is simply so much pleasure to be found here already that it's hard to recommend waiting. There's no fear of losing a few bottles in the cellar.

Only four vintners farm in San Lorenzo, including Giuseppe Russo of Girolamo Russo and Marc De Grazia of Tenuta delle Terre Nere. The 2020 Etna Rosso San Lorenzo shows lots of bright, lifted fruit with cherry and redcurrant at the top. The fruit is discreet, however, and is nicely wrapped into the wine's elegantly rich texture. San Lorenzo is special because this site, at 700 to 800 meters in elevation, is usually cooler. It has rich soils with rocks and sand. The violent 1981 eruption grazed the perimeter of this location. You get a wine of volume and depth as a result.
