Score 92/100 · Drink 2013-2027, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Oct 2010

The 2007 Bolgheri Superiore Grattamacco is impeccably elegant. It is a somewhat restrained wine next to the other 2007s from Bolgheri, yet there is plenty of depth and sheer personality in the bottle. Ripe, silky tannins support a core of dark plums, cherries, roasted coffee beans, leather, herbs and minerals, all of which come together on a mid-weight frame. Like so many 2007s, the Grattamacco is already incredibly delicious. It should drink well to age twenty, perhaps beyond. Grattamacco is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 15% Sangiovese.

Grattamacco
Grattamacco

Grattamacco’s story begins when Piermario Meletti Cavallari purchased an abandoned vineyard in 1977 and grafted over many of the vines. He produced one of the earliest Super Tuscans in 1982 – a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese and a wine which continues to earn acclaim today.
