Concentrated, healthy-looking ruby. Immediate red fruit and French oak nose and freshness and balance on the palate. A little internationally styled and very approachable. (WS)

Abbona's 2004 Barolo Pressenda, from a vineyard in Monforte, reveals greater freshness and delineation in its aromatics, qualities that are also found on the palate, where the wine offers plenty of perfumed red fruit, spices, minerals and menthol with notable vibrancy. This Barolo comes together beautifully as it sits in the glass. There is an energy and vitality here that I find especially appealing. The tannins need another year or two at a minimum to settle down, but this Barolo offers much potential. The Pressenda spent a year in new French oak followed by two years in Slavonian oak casks.
