The 2012 Barolo Enrico VI, from the Villero vineyard in Castiglione Falleto, is a deep, beautifully layered wine. Dark cherry, plum, new leather, menthol and licorice all flesh out effortlessly. The 2012 is rich and expansive, with striking depth and terrific overall balance.

Slightly more low-key compared to the exuberant 2011 vintage, the 2012 Barolo Enrico VI adopts a bold, immediate and vertical approach. The bouquet hides little and delivers distinct tones of dark fruit, plum, tilled earth, licorice and spice. In the mouth, it offers a solid sense of structure with soft fruit flavors that wrap over the palate.

Deep and fleshy in the glass, the 2012 Barolo Enrico VI wraps around the palate with good depth and textural resonance, but in the mid-weight style of the year. Sweet herbs, tobacco, spices and dark-fleshed fruit are some of the signatures. Fleshy and open-knit, the 2012 offers good near-medium term-appeal, although I would like to see a little more excitement from the Enrico VI, which emerges from the celebrated Villero vineyard. Today, the 2012 comes across as a bit heavy and marked by oak.

Villero, Castiglione Falletto. Concentrated mid ruby with orange tinges. A nose that displays brooding fruit with spicy notes and a hint of dried fruit and oak. Lithe and focused on the palate. Succulent yet tannic finish. Classic Barolo and in need of age. (WS)
