The darker, more powerful side of Sangiovese - known as Prugnolo Gentile in these parts - comes across in the 2009 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva. This is a decidedly imposing, structured wine built on intensity. Hints of smoke, earthiness, tobacco, licorice and leather add complexity, but the overall impression is mostly of rusticity.

Their black label indicates a Sangiovese with tiny quantities of Merlot. Deep youthful ruby. Much more backward than the white label and a little riper and sweeter on the palate. Finely tuned and balanced but not open yet. Succulent firm finish. (WS)
