Cask sample. Orange gold colour. Smells of coconut and freshly planed sandalwood. Tastes of yellow plums and honey on toast. A little minty in its honeyed breath blowing long and cool and sweet and bitter slow. Satsumas. Firm. Fresh. Ineluctably luscious. Sensuous, cherry-syrup-drenched mille-feuille of flavours, textures, density in the mouth. A wine that curls back and loops languid, silk-heavy handcuffs on that taster's throat. There is a spell in this bottle, of that I am sure... (TC)

The 2007 Colheita Tawny Port comes in with 112 grams per liter of residual sugar. This is a friendly and easy ten-year Tawny, with a bright feel and an elegant mid-palate. It finishes well, tasty and fresh. There's nothing overly complicated here, but it is impossible to dislike.

Very difficult to open this without making a mess with the wax capsule. Quite a surprising colour – a slight pink colour to the pale gold. Glorious aromas of bitter orange, spice and ginger, with those unsulphured apricots thrown in. There's also very interesting note a little like hay or dried grasses, almost stemmy – makes it smell dry. On the palate, tastes like a cross between white port and tawny, with a fine balance of sweetness and the freshness that comes from that hay-like quality. Incredibly complex, almost a little medicinal, and with so much more to come (as an earlier tasting of very old Colheitas has shown). Most unusual and tantalising, with a little bit of spirit on the finish compared with the older age-dated white ports from Kopke. (JH)
