Tasting notes
Lavender-like herbal, floral and smoky pungency is accompanied on the nose by intimations of the white currant, white peach and grapefruit that go on to offer luscious brightness on a polished palate. Piquancy of pits and seeds, seed-crunching bite and crystalline stony impingements serve for invigoration on a penetrating finish of tongue-tingling vibrancy and consummate refreshment.

Bright elderflower, lime cordial, jasmine and honeysuckle frolic through the nose. Burly and serious on the palate, which is four-square and compressed and very dry and focused. Superb density and weight and a solid line of acidity to back it up, but not enough to make the pronounced dryness at all cumbersome. Drink in 2021.
There is nothing ostentatious about the nose of the Altenberg, probably because minerality never smells as strongly as fruit. The palate opens with a delightful expression of good old-fashioned apple and pear flavours, served on a silky texture and finally wrapped in a mineral coating, which puts a cool soothing complexion on the long finish. Great Saar elegance. (MS)
