Tasting notes
This “long gold capsule” bottling represents the same pickings as the “gold capsule,” with the grapes then being further sorted at the winery. The intense nose of candied mint, grapefruit and cassis puts me in mind of Scheurebe. Confectionary elements, joined by white raisin on the oily, palpably extract-rich palate, are counterpoised with astonishingly fresh, juicy evocations of grapefruit and lime. The resulting, slightly edgy tension is sustained through a sappy, gripping finish.

Aromas of pristine orange blossom here, together with a strong infusion of slate and orange aromas that swerve into orange peel, kumquat and tangerine territory. The palate has a very intense core of essence-like fruit and the acidity really claims the palate in a classic way here. Umami finish with porcini-like notes. Drink over the next two or more decades.
The 2017 Bernkasteler Lay Auslese (Long Gold Capsule), AP 18 18, is very clear, intense and generous but precise on the nose, with lots of mango, ripe peach, mirabelle and honey aromas. On the palate, this is a generously rich but refined, finessed and lush Auslese with a salty-piquant finish that is intense, complex and long. Honey-sweet but still crystalline, transparent and really kicking, this is another gorgeous 2017 Auslese from the Prüm family. Tasted in March 2019.
