The 2020 Volnay Les Fremiets 1er Cru has a lot of reduction on the nose, though I appreciate the fruit profile of black cherries and blueberries. Some warmth comes through with aeration and blurs the edges. The palate is medium-bodied, as it is made in a reductive style, but it works. It has just the right amount of dryness, with plenty of cracked black pepper laced with tobacco towards the finish. Give this two or three years in bottle. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

The 2020 Volnay Les Fremiets 1er Cru wax picked on 26 August. It has an opulent red cherry, kirsch scented nose that would benefit from a little more delineation. The 50% whole bunch is neatly integrated on the palate, but it just misses some precision and mineralité on the finish.
