92% Sangiovese, 8% Malvasia Nera and Colorino. 20 months in small French oak barrels, 225 litre and 500 litre, of which 60% new. Dark crimson. Very heavily oaked. Heavy handed. A bit oily on the end. Pinched. Sour. Where’s the fresh fruit? (JR)

The 2011 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello Fonterutoli is a standout wine and I prefer it to the 2012 vintage and the 2010 vintage (that I reviewed twice over the course of a year with divergent scores). Of these wines, this vintage offers the broadest sense of intensity and generosity. The wine is also distinguished by dark fruit and spice that stand tall with clear identities. The best fruit from the estate's various vineyard sites are selected for this wine. This careful selection process makes it possible to dedicate the best fruit to a wine like this despite varying vintage conditions.

The 2011 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Fonterutoli is dark, juicy and enveloping, with gorgeous textural richness and plenty of nuance. The flavors are bold and intense, yet there is good freshness woven throughout. Sweet red cherry, plum and spice are all pushed forward in an exotic, flamboyant wine loaded with personality. The very best qualities of the 2011 vintage come through in this radiant, beautifully crafted Chianti Classico from Fonterutoli.

Concentrated crimson. Stylish red fruit and oak nose. Modernist style with a fresh ripe fruit palate and a perfect dose of coating tannins. (WS)
