The 2006 Barbaresco Brich Ronchi is just beginning to show the first signs of aromatic complexity. A big, ample Barbaresco, the 2006 has plenty of brawn and muscle on display today. In 2006, the Barbaresco was done with shorter macerations, higher temperatures in fermentation and aged mostly in French oak barriques, with only about 20-30% of the wine aged in cask, which makes it a wine of transition to the style Rocca favors today. Most importantly, though, the 2006 has aged very nicely. The only thing the 2006 is missing is a bit of persistence on the finish. That said, the 2006 has developed better than I had originally expected.

(from 60+-year-old vines facing southeast; aging included 20% new barriques Good full red. Spicy redcurrant aroma lifted by a note of rose petal. Juicy, spicy and aromatic in the mouth, with lovely cut and intensity and a firm tannic spine. Less lush today than the Loreto, and showing less early sweetness, but this elegant, juicy wine projects lovely nebbiolo perfume and has the structure for a graceful evolution in bottle. Rocca told me this vineyard features the family's own clones and was planted by his grandfather.

The 2006 Barbaresco Vigneto Brich Ronchi is an attractive wine with lovely clarity and precision to its fruit. This is a surprisingly accessible Bric Ronchi perfect for near-term drinking. Even a talented and committed grower like Angelo Rocca couldn't do better in this difficult harvest.

Even a talented and committed grower like Angelo Rocca couldn't do better in this difficult harvest. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2018. Proprietor Angelo Rocca makes some of the richest Barbarescos in town, but even he couldn't overcome the challenges of the 2006 vintage. His Barbarescos show excellent integrity of fruit and a refined use of oak, even if they don't quite reach the level of his finest wines.
