The 2015 Barbaresco Riserva Camp Gros is a powerful, burly wine. There is a good bit of depth to the red-toned fruit, but the tannins are pretty overpowering. I am not used to seeing this level of aggressiveness in the Camp Gros. Hopefully time will help the 2015 find a bit better balance. For now, the 2015 is a wine to bury in a deep corner of the cellar.

Barbaresco. Tasted blind. Just mid ruby with orange tinges. Impressive nose of cherry compote with top notes of spice and a hint of iron. Multi-layered, supple fruit that has already developed a little and with a suggestion of fruit cake on the finish. Perfect dose of acidity and bags of animating, chewy tannins on the finish. Elegant rather than full-bodied. Can be approached now. (WS)

Next to the 2016 vintage, this wine from 2015 reminds us of the broad, rich and thick textural support that characterizes this warm vintage. The 2015 Barbaresco Riserva Camp Gros Martinenga moves slowly and smoothly over the palate, imparting robust and soft fruit flavors along the way. It is open and generous, but it doesn't give away too much at once. It gives, then holds back and then gives again. I doubled decanted my sample before tasting it, and you can play that give-and-take forward for some time as the wine aerates in the glass. I would love to revisit this Riserva in 10 years' time. Exactly 7,226 bottles will be released in September 2020.
