Tasting notes
The 2021 Volnay Clos de Verseuils 1er Cru has commendable concentration with more black fruit than its peers, but there is a lot of reduction here that only marginally dissipates with time. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, a keen line of acidity and a bright, fresh, fleshy finish that is understated but focused. Elegant and refined, though with time that patina of new oak masks the terroir and I end up reducing my score. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

The 2021 Volnay 1er Cru Clos du Verseuil is pure and elegant, offering up aromas of plums, sweet red berries, orange rind and peony, followed by a medium to full-bodied, satiny and sensual palate that compensates for what it lacks in depth and structure with perfume, charm and finesse.
Tank sample. Light to mid crimson. Sweet and almost creamy on the nose, lifted by the tangy red-fruit aroma. Darker-fruited on the palate. Great balance between the fruit and the super-fine tannins with moderate intensity and excellent freshness. (JH)
