The 2014 Barolo Villero is the most complete and satisfying of these wines. Deeply spiced, with plenty of mentholated and balsamic overtones, the 2014 is pliant and super-expressive, with terrific depth and persistence. It would be nice to see the other 2014 Barolos at this level, as the 2014 Villero is a real beauty. Give it a few more years in bottle to come into its own.

The Giacomo Fenocchio estate enjoys excellent access to some of the best vineyard sites in the Barolo appellation. The 2014 Barolo Villero is one of my favorite wines among this group of new releases. This wine carries itself with broad shoulders and a steady stride. Dark fruit aromas of dried cherry and blackberry are backed by savory spice and tobacco. Lighter touches of clove and cinnamon appear on the close. Only 5,000 bottles were produced in the low-yield 2014 vintage.

Castiglione Falletto. Tasted blind. Maturing, deep ruby with narrow orange tinges. Hints of cherry and tar. Very slow to open up and lots of coating tannins. Simmering class. (WS)

Monforte d’Alba. Healthy and just mid ruby with orange tinges. Still a little unsettled on the nose because of the very recent bottling. At first not a huge difference with the 2014 Castellero on the nose. Aeration shows more precision and depth. Cherry and violets, but far more noble, coating tannins than the Castellero. The fruit keeps up, but really slow to open up. Transparent. Quite dazzling, if firmly structured. (WS)
