Tasting notes
Tasted from magnum the 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a showstopper, hauntingly dark and intense, with depths of rum-soaked cherries, mocha, tobacco and sweet sage lifted by minty freshness. A distinct citrus tinge complements its ripe red and black fruits, while brisk acidity keeps the experience fresh. Velvety textures envelop the senses. The 2004 finishes with dramatic length, perfectly resolved yet full of mouthwatering tension and a tart cranberry note that leaves the taster with bated breath.

The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a dark brooding effort that emerges from the glass with warm notes of mocha, spices, dark fruit, licorice and tar. Rich and voluminous, the wine blossoms on the palate with tons of depth. Sweet notes from the French oak appear on the finish, but everything about this wine is totally seamless and elegant. Though delicious today, the 2004 Riserva is sure to improve in bottle. Sweet tobacco, incense and fennel add complexity on the close.

Very deep, dark, opaque ruby with a black tinge. Beautiful mature fruit and oak nose. Restrained but succulent fruit palate with juicy acidity. Closes slightly up on a complex, fragrant finish. Very young still. (WS)
