Tasting notes
The joint effort between Capannelle and Avignonesi, called 1997 50 & 50, is a blend of equal parts Sangiovese from Capannelle and Merlot from Avignonesi's vineyard. It is only sold as a future, but I was told by the importer that there are about 25 cases available for the USA. A seriously-endowed, dense ruby/purple-colored effort with plenty of new oak, it is somewhat internationally-styled, with loads of extract, tannin, and richness. Wines such as this can be found at lower prices, but they will not have the names Capannelle and Avignonesi. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2016. Importer: Neil Empson, Empson, USA, Alexandria, VA; tel. A joint venture with Capannelle of Chianti Classico, which supplies the sangiovese to complement the Avignonesi merlot. Deep garnet-edged ruby. Very spicy, expressive aromas of ripe, sweet plum complicated by clove, cinnamon and cedar from the oak. Long and vigorous on the palate; fresher than the 1997 Desiderio, with livelier acidity from the sangiovese. A bit less weighty but with compensating balance in the middle palate and focus and thrust on the aftertaste. Unquestionably the best series from the house in the 1990s.
