Ironically, given how tropical and dominantly sweet is this year’s Rausch Spätlese A.P. #11, this Auslese introduces somewhat more northerly fruit character – Rainier cherry and apple – to the mango and pineapple familiar from the Spätlese. What’s more, while it’s lushly fruited and glycerol-rich, it conveys a greater sense of delicacy, more sheer juiciness and enhanced animation, as well as mouthwatering salinity to complement the soothing and sweet sides of a lusciously lingering finish.

Pretty loquat and mirabelle-plum notes here, along with honeysuckle and Williams pears. A very finely structured palate follows, composed of bright streaks of acidity and lightly textured pastry sheets. It’s sweet, but not noticeably so, and it ambles along with real elegance. Drink now.

The 2018 Rausch Auslese –Versteigerung– (AP 6) is very clear and flinty on the deep, pure and elegant nose that is spectacularly bright, precise and fresh. Lush and round on the intense and concentrated palate, which is more vicious in texture, this is a highly finessed and stimulatingly salty Auslese with great balance and fine orange bitters on the finish. This is from a single, five-year-old fuder. Bottled with 8% alcohol and 127 grams of residual sugar. Tasted in June 2019.

AP No 10. Bumptious with no excess of acidity! Hint of cabbage and golden syrup – so some botrytis? A bit of chew and lots of freshness. Floral more than fruit, plus lychees. (JR)
