2019 Musigny

Roumier's 2019 Musigny Grand Cru is maturing in a barrel from cooper Eric Millard, and the oak makes its presence felt, inflecting the wine's aromas of sweet red berries, plums and peonies with aromas of mint and vanilla pod. Full-bodied, layered and concentrated, this is a deep, multidimensional Musigny, but will it ever entirely digest its new wood? Only the well-healed and the well-connected will find out.

The 2019 Musigny Grand Cru comprises just one barrel this year and is 100% whole bunch. It is beautifully defined on the nose, the explosion of black fruit laced with autumn leaves and black pepper, and the whole bunch more conspicuous than the new oak. The wood comes through more on the palate, imparting a sense of sweetness and gloss. A mixture of red and black fruit laced with blood orange, it fans out wonderfully toward the finish. Extraordinarily persistent, though maybe the Bonnes-Mares has slightly more complexity. I doubt you will be able to pick this up from the supermarket shelf, but good luck searching for it anyway.
