Aromas of plums, wild berries, sweet soil tones and woodsmoke introduce the 2019 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Aux Fournaux, a medium to full-bodied, richer and more muscular expression of Savigny than the supple, charming Lavières. Less immediate, this is more of a medium- to long-term proposition.

Cask sample. Ruby colour and not too flashy on the nose. A herbal note – or do I mean dried grasses? – which is a welcome change from the sweet fruit so widely evident. There's even a hint of dried orange peel. Note those 'dried's though. The finish is indeed pretty drying, as though there was a bit of a struggle to extract the juice from the grapes. It may be a lovely wine in the end. (JR)
