Score 93-95/100 · William Kelley, Wine Advocate, Jan 2021

Aromas of cherries, cassis, woodsmoke, caramelized orange rind and rich soil tones introduce Dugat's 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques, a medium to full-bodied, lively and precise wine with a darker fruit profile, more mid-palate amplitude and a longer finish than the domaine's premier cru blend. Lively and mineral, this is an especially fine-boned Lavaux Saint-Jacques.

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has a very mineral-driven, terroir-expressive bouquet that displays exquisite definition. Not powerful per se , yet incredibly focused, with a surfeit of finesse. The palate is strict, linear and quite saline; a distinctive estuarine element defines the finish, and hints of Japanese nori and oyster shell linger on the aftertaste. The kind of wine you want to keep returning to. Alas, there were just three barrels this year instead of the usual five. Wines like this challenge the whole notion of this vineyard being a Premier Cru because it outperforms many Grand Crus.
