Tasting notes
The 2020 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru is initially pretty malodorous on the nose, though it gains clarity. It is quite earthy and mulchy, with some stem addition here, with tea leaves and black pepper scents coming through with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe tannins, fine acidity, relatively smooth texture, and a touch of spice box on the finish. This is a Volnay that meliorates in the glass. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

The 2020 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru is completely de-stemmed with one-third new oak, cropped at just 12hl/ha due to the old age of vines (90-years) that produces small berries. The bouquet has a stupendous nose, beautifully defined with a mixture of red and black fruit, the most floral of Clerget’s Volnays. The palate is medium-bodied with a plump opening, quite saturated tannins, powerful with just a slight greenness on the finish. I suspect that will be subsumed with time. Tricky to see how this Volnay will evolve, but I will give it the benefit of the doubt.
