Served blind, alongside the 2003 Bourgogne Rouge, the 2003 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru les Véroilles put in a strong showing considering the vintage. The nose is quite floral in style, well defined with black rather than red fruit, hints of honey and fresh fig infusing the black fruit. The palate is full-bodied for one of Ghislaine's wines, but nicely balanced, the acidity lower than other vintages as you would expect, yet offering good substance and structure on the voluminous finish. What it lacks in finesse is compensated by sheer gumption! Tasted September 2015.

Good deep red. Superripe aromas of dark cherry, raspberry and resiny earth; hints of surmaturite Dense, sweet and full; hugely ripe and tannic. The wine's slightly porty suggestion of roasted nuts on the back, in conjunction with a tonic mineral quality, makes this tough going today. With air, this grew fresher and showed stronger finishing fruit. A bit hard to predict, but I would not be surprised to see this wine reward a decade of cellaring.

Good red-ruby. Complex, wild aromas of blackberry, violet, minerals, smoke and underbrush. Very dense and sappy, with impressively intense flavors of blackberry and crushed stone. The strongest but also the most austere of these young 2003s, with the explosive finish featuring a whiplash of black fruits and crushed stone.

Broad, scented and solid. Utterly true to its origin, despite vintage character. Thick, dense and pretty stolid. Strawberry mivvi (for those who remember these ice creams on a stick…) Too expensive for my taste. (JR)
