The 2019 Pommard 1er Cru Combes Dessus unwinds in the glass with lovely aromas of red berries, dark chocolate, rich soil tones and orange rind. Medium-bodied, bright and tangy, its lively core of fruit is framed by refined tannins and segues into a saline, mouthwatering finish.

The 2019 Pommard Combes Dessus 1er Cru has a straightforward, maybe slightly rustic bouquet compared to the domaine’s more sensual Volnays. The palate is well balanced with sappy red berry fruit, quite saline on the back palate with a welcome touch of spice on the succulent finish. It just needs the aromatics to up their game.
Small vineyard of 0.38 ha on the wrong side of the road. d’Angerville admits it’s more like a good village wine than a premier cru. He has a soft spot for it because it was the first he converted to biodynamics. Cask sample. Vibrant and earthy. Racy and smooth. Not the most ambitious Pommard. A little loose on the end. (JR)

Marquis d'Angerville is synonymous with the village of Volnay, having long made some of the village’s finest wines. Best known for its Premier Cru monopole vineyard, Clos des Ducs, this estate crafts fine-boned, elegant styles of Pinot Noir – wines that act as standard-bearers for the appellation.
