Score 95/100 · Drink 2015-2035, William Kelley, Wine Advocate, May 2023

The 1991 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is showing beautifully, exhibiting a rich bouquet of plums and red berries mingled with notions of exotic spices, smoked duck and burning embers. Medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with a sweet core of fruit, ripe acids and sweet but slightly stringy structuring tannins, this is a lusty, carnal red Burgundy at its peak today.

The 1991 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru shows light bricking but otherwise is deep in color. There is generous red fruit, pretty precocious for the vintage, with scents of hoisin, menthol and light terracotta aromas. Medium-bodied, this is framed by pliant tannins, slightly meaty red fruit and touches of dried blood on the ferrous finish that shows its age more than the youthful aromatics. This is an admirable addition to the canon of great wines overseen by the late Philippe Engel, and it will not improve with further bottle age. Tasted at a private dinner in London.
