The 2011 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes has a charming bouquet that refuses to be overshadowed by the 2010. Vivacious, pretty red cherry and crushed strawberry notes, a little more blue fruit compared to the previous vintage with fine delineation and great purity. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit laced with white pepper and a touch of tobacco. There is a sense of linearity that many 2011s seem to have evolved from, but this example has developed impressive freshness and vibrancy with just a little piquancy on the finish. Excellent. Tasted at Flint Wines’ Arlaud retrospective.

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes 2011 from Domaine d’Arlaud has a well-defined and vibrant, quite complex bouquet with blackberry and raspberry fruit to the fore, well-integrated oak, sous-bois and spicy notes developing soon after. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins. This feels a little rugged in the mouth, but not uncouth, with good acidity and “blocky” red berry fruit on the finish. Fine, but it needed more finesse to merit a higher appraisal.
Good medium red. Knockout nose melds raspberry, smoke, game and brown spices. Very rich but a bit youthfully imploded, with a distinctly rocky character giving precision to the flavors of strawberry, raspberry and spices. A rather backward 2011 with excellent length and mineral grip.
