The Parusso 2019 Barolo Mariondino (in the bottle with the orange label) draws its fruit from Castiglione Falletto at the heart of the appellation. The wine presents fine aromas and a slightly more streamlined style compared to some of the other wines in this portfolio. There is wild cherry, iris root, crushed stone, licorice and tea leaf. The wine shows a tight structure and grippy tannins. Some 6,000 bottles were made.

Castiglione Falletto. Lustrous ruby with orange tinges. Trademark exotic raspberry, cassis and passion-fruit nose, with complex oak notes. It is now quite upfront in its youth but over time will melt into a complex whole. Full fruit palate supported by oak and with the merest suggestion of passito . Succulent finish with bags of sandpapery tannins. Very distinctive but patience is needed. (WS)

Soft ruby red, medium intensity, crushed raspberry fruits on the first nose, with clear orange peel and sweet oak, tobacco, almost manzanilla edge to this, feels a little more evolved than I would expect (opened a second bottle to be sure). This is an attractive wine from winemaker Marco Parusso, soft on the finish, no need to wait to drink. 2ha estate set at 290m altitude, vines aged between 20 and 40 years old, located in Castiglione Falleto, 5,500v/ha. Second year on the Place.

The 2019 Barolo Mariondino is gorgeous. Broad and ample, the Mariondino impresses with its persistence and spherical feel. Black cherry, spice, lavender, menthol and dried flowers infuse the 2019 with striking depth. In 2019, the Mariondino is especially resonant and expansive, with striking depth and fine balance. Sandy soils and a cool micro-climate in this parcel yield a Barolo with tons of floral presence and a distinctive blood orange note that add freshness.
