Score 87/100 · Drink 2002-2012, Robert Parker, Aug 1999
The dark ruby-colored 1995 Barolo Vigna del Gris is astringently tannic, extremely compressed, and exceptionally earthy. With airing, cedar, dried herbs, spicy oak, and cherries emerge, but this wine is difficult to evaluate. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2012. Importer: Empson, USA, Alexandria, VA; tel. Medium red. Dried rose and a hint of autumnal spices; shows Graves-like notes of tobacco, marzipan and nutmeg. Sweet, velvety and rich, with a complex musky quality and strong spice tones. Substantial tongue dusting tannins shorten the fruit somewhat today. I'd wait a year or two on this one.
