Mid crimson. Quite an evolved nose. Some treacle toffee – rather aggressively modern and jagged. Some sweetness but not especially Côte Rotie. Very severe oaking. (JR)

The 1998 Cote Rotie Champin Le Seigneur (just over 2,000 cases produced) was aged in 40% new oak, and bottled with no clarification. It exhibits a deep ruby/purple color as well as a sweet bouquet of roasted earth, black fruits, licorice, coffee, and toast. Fleshy and medium to full-bodied, with excellent texture, this impressive Cote Rotie can be drunk now, or cellared for a decade. Importers: New Castle Imports, Myrtle Beach, SC; tel.
