I was also able to taste a small vertical of the Cornas Vin Noir, which comes from three different parcels of granite terroirs. The 2018 Cornas Vin Noir is incredibly expressive and open, with beautiful red and black fruits as well as complex notes of rose petals, flowers, sappy herbs, and peppery game. In a very different, more feminine style compared to the 2019, it has silky tannins, wonderful freshness, and a great finish. Drink this brilliant, seamless, thrilling Cornas over the coming 15+ years.

Deep, brilliant violet color. Powerfully scented black/blue fruit liqueur, potpourri and exotic spice aromas, along with hints of woodsmoke, incense and olive paste. Supply, seamless and broad on the palate, offering deeply concentrated blackberry, mulberry, bitter chocolate and fruitcake flavors that become livelier and sweeter with aeration. Rich yet surprisingly energetic, finishing sappy and alluringly sweet, with lithe tannins, repeating florality and superb persistence.

When tasting the barrels likely to be part of the 2018 Cornas Vin Noir, it was immediately apparent that there's a step up in intensity, likely from the generally older vines that provide fruit for this cuvée. Violets and cassis in some instances, roasted meat and mocha in others, but always with great intensity. Full-bodied, velvety and plush, with long finishes, these components should yield an outstanding finished wine.

100% Syrah. Aged for 14 months in old oak. Cask sample. Tasted blind. Succulent black fruit, rounded and accessible structure, lots of padding and weight on the finish. Complexity will come. (RH)
