The 2021 Clémentin de Pape Clément is 25% aged in tank, the rest in second-fill barrels where the malolactic takes place. It has a straightforward, slightly green nose, a little woody with just a touch of baking spice. The palate is medium-bodied with a rather hard entry, slightly raw tannins and an austere finish. This is hard work at the moment, and it just lacks the fruit concentration to maintain equilibrium.
The 2021 Clémentin de Pape Clément has a warm and inviting bouquet with quite plush black cherry and boysenberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins, moderate depth, lightening up towards the finish that just needs more flesh and substance. Slightly bitter on the aftertaste.
The 2021 Le Clémentin de Pape Clément is terrific. Silky tannins and bright, effusive aromatics grace this mid-weight second wine from the château. Hints of spice, gravel, tar, mocha, torrefaction and incense add layers of nuance, but the Clementin is a wine to appreciate for its charming, up-front personality. The 2021 is beautifully done. Tasted three times.
