Tasting notes
The 2013 Barolo Massara is powerful and burly in the glass. Wild cherry, smoke, tobacco, licorice, incense, white pepper, iron, game and huge, imposing tannins shape this strapping, classically austere Barolo. Readers will have to be patient with the 2013, but those who can wait will be rewarded with a rigorous, old-school Barolo loaded with character. The 2013 will never be an especially finessed wine, but it is intriguing, to say the least.

Verduno. High-toned nose and almost aggressively fruity! Then very drying tannins. Ambitious but embryonic. (JR)
Verduno. Tasted blind. Developing mid ruby with orange tinges. Fragrant raspberry nose with a little lift and with hints of Moroccan leather. Plenty of linear acidity and fragrant shy fruit. Rather austere for the moment yet very compelling. (WS)
Verduno. Just mid ruby. Tea, liquorice and chinotto on the nose. Pinot Noir-like in stature and with firm, but fine, grainy tannins. Already approachable, but will open up further. (WS)
