A gorgeous, totally striking wine, the 2012 Barolo Via Nuova opens with compelling, captivating aromatics. Deep, fleshy and powerful, the 2012 has blossomed beautifully over the last year, suggesting it still has room to improve. Tasted next to the Cannubi and Mosconi, the Via Nuova is a bit deeper than the former but more polished than the latter. Herb, smoke, licorice and menthol meld into the powerful, savory finish.

Smells really quite unusually ripe. Softer than most with a distinctly spearmint thread running through. Should give pleasure fairly early but is not the subtlest. (JR)
Elegance and harmony are two leading traits that can be attributed to the 2012 Barolo Via Nuova. This wine represents a balanced blend of Nebbiolo grapes from various sites. That blending flexibility adds to the overall balance of the wine, which is very important in a vintage like 2012 that was not always easy across the various townships of the Barolo appellation. Bright cherry and blackberry are followed by spice and grilled herb.
Barolo. Lustrous mid ruby with orange tinges. Oatmeal and hints of sweet amarena cherry. Amarena cherry confit on the palate with bitter-sweet, powdery tannins. Solidly built, perhaps a tiny bit drying but plenty of fruit to contrast that. (WS)
