A 2 ha vineyard on clay and limestone soils, with vines of an average of 40-45 years old. It's part of the Lazzarito Cru in Serralunga d'Alba. It's 300-350 m altitude, with a S/SE exposure. Fragrant nose with rose and black cherry, very punchy acid and tannin that is furry but not obstructive. Not the most eloquent example, but certainly typical. (RH)

Porro's 2011 Barolo Vigna Lazzairasco is pretty, but it also lacks mid-palate depth and persistence. Today, the 2011 comes across as a bit thin and hollow, with only modest depth and concentration. Sweet dried cherry, dried flowers, mint and savory herbs are quite forward all suggest the 2011 is best enjoyed sooner rather than later.

Serralunga d’Alba. Just mid ruby with a broad orange rim. Impressive mouthful of sweet fruit and big tannins. Serralunga muscle matched with ripeness. (WS)

Striking aromatics and bright, finely sculpted fruit inform the 2011 Barolo Vigna Lazzairasco, an utterly beguiling wine that constantly changes in the glass. There is an element of mystery that is both compelling and that also suggests the Lazzairasco is only showing a hint of its true potential.
