Moderately saturated medium red. Subdued aromas of cherry, blueberry and licorice, showing a slightly candied quality. Youthfully medicinal and fresh, with good intensity but limited sweetness and flesh. Silky in texture but in a fairly light style for the vintage, finishing with an herbal coolness. Suggests fruit picked on the early side.

The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino is striking. Sweet red cherries, flowers, tobacco, cedar and worn-in leather are some of the many aromas and flavors that take shape in the glass. The 2007 impresses for its textural depth and volume, both of which have been achieved while retaining considerable Sangiovese character. Ripe, silky tannins lurk beneath the fruit, but there is so much concentration they are hard to notice. The estate gave the Brunello 30 months in cask.

I was deeply impressed with the two Brunelli I tasted from Le Chiuse di Sotto. Sadly, proprietor Gianni Brunelli passed away in late 2008, but he left behind a rich legacy, including these two captivating wines. Importer: A.I. Selections, Astoria, NY; tel. (718) 777-2243

Visually almost Pinot Noir-like. Chalky and minerally, but not giving a lot away on the fruit side. Very elegant and compact, polished even. Fantastic elegant mouthfeel too. Persistent powdery tannin. Wonderful stuff. (WS)
