2003 Echezeaux

Tasting notes
Saturated ruby-red. Compelling aromas of black raspberry, roasted meat and smoky oak, complicated by suggestions of fruit syrup and minerals. Sweet and thick but not at all over the top. Finishes with building tannins and strong, tangy fruit. Like the 2004, this has some rather unusual numbers for the vintage: the fruit was harvested very late, on September 3, with just 12.5% potential alcohol (in bottle, it's a mere 12.3%), and was neither chaptalized nor acidified. Hardly your typical 2003 grand cru.

There are two and a half barrels of the 2003 Echezeaux while normal years produce twice that quantity. Aged entirely in new oak, it reveals a nose of fresh black cherries, flowers, and spices. Medium to full-bodied and satin-textured in the attack as well as mid-palate, this dark fruit-filled effort displays a ripe tannin-packed lengthy finish. Projected maturity: 2009-2016.
