Score 18/20 · Drink 2029-2032, Julia Harding MW, jancisrobinson.com, Feb 2020

60-year-old vines, picked at 119 Oechsle. Tiny yields of < 10 hl/ha. About one third of the fruit was botrytised, two-thirds shrivelled. Cask sample. Deeper gold than the Riesling Auslesen. Golden and honeyed, buttered apricots, bitter orange and touch of sweet spice. All orange marmalade and honey on the palate, smooth, deep and caressing with brilliant fruit concentration and that orangey intensity. Spice and a hint of ginger on the finish. Sweeter-tasting and more viscous than the Riesling Auslesen, more creamy. Fatter, too, but no lack of acidity, just a little less piercing and crystalline than the Rieslings. (JH)
