Tasted blind. Inky and ungenerous. So hard and bitter! Astringent. (JR)

The 2021 Le Carillon D'Angélus is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc that spent 18 months in 60% new French oak. Black cherries, mulberries, spicy wood, and hints of graphite and spicy wood all define the aromatics, and this beauty hits the palate with medium-bodied richness, a lively, elegant mouthfeel, fine tannins, and outstanding length.

The 2021 Le Carillon d'Angélus offers up aromas of dark berries, grilled plums, espresso roast, sweet soil tones and cigar wrapper, followed by a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and layered palate that's deep and concentrated, with lively acids, chalky tannins and a long, youthfully oak-inflected finish. Like its big sibling, it's closed with a natural cork.

Double the amount of Cabernet Franc than usual, because Merlot was more affected by frost and mildew, and it has a big impact on the character of the wine, giving a huge lift to the aromatics but also increasing austerity and tension. Expect clove and white pepper spice, a ton of slate and graphite, blueberry fruit, precise and finessed. Not your tyical Carillon but full of balance and finesse, with a slow reveal through the palate. 60% new oak with the rest in stainless steel, 16hl/h yield.
