The 2017 Saint-Aubin Les Champlots 1er Cru is initially a little oaky on the nose, although this is rapidly assimilated and the terroir comes through nicely, showing green apple, wet limestone and touches of orchard fruit. The palate is balanced, smooth and slightly creamy in texture, with almond and vanilla pod notes on the midpalate. Not a deep or grippy Saint-Aubin, though it is quite seductive and certainly pretty. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Savigny-lès-Beaune.

The 2017 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Les Champlots is showing brilliantly from bottle, unwinding to reveal notes of citrus oil, crisp orchard fruit, clear honey, white flowers and wheat toast. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and beautifully balanced, with terrific concentration, chalky structuring extract, and a long, mineral finish.

A bit more restrained than the Puligny, but a fine drink at a good price. Lots of ampleur and depth and persistence. GV (JR)

The 2017 Saint-Aubin Les Champlots 1er Cru, which contains slightly more chalk than the other Premier Crus, has a crisp, tightly wound, crushed stone driven bouquet with touches of nettle and a pinch of nutmeg. The palate is fresh and vibrant on the entry with a fine thread of acidity. I admire the tension and "bite" of this wine, linear and full of energy if not quite conveying the length of a top terroir. Still, this should be well worth seeking out once released.
