Revello's 2005 Barolo Vigna Gattera has developed beautifully since I lasted tasted it. Dark cherry, pomegranate, mint and rose petal notes are bold and punchy throughout, with lovely freshness. Slightly angular 2005 tannins give the wine its persistence. All the elements are very nicely balanced in this super-expressive La Morra Barolo.

(aged in a blend of 20-hectoliter Austrian casks and tonneaux; the rest of the Revello Barolo crus are aged in barriques, about 40% new) Complex nose melds cherry, plum, tar, coffee, mocha, cedar and tobacco; like an essence of Barolo. Then silky, sweet and nicely balanced, with a distinctly velvety middle given definition by good energy. Finishes with very suave tannins and lovely grip.

The 2005 Barolo Gattera is made from a plot that features white soils and is the only Barolo here to be aged in a medium-size 15 hectoliter cask. This gorgeous Barolo is built on a core of fresh raspberries, flowers and sweet spices. The wine offers superb freshness and closes with an elegant, refined finish, where floral notes give the wine a pretty lift. A generous, engaging wine, the Gattera should continue to drink nicely over the coming years.

This is another outstanding set of wines from brothers Enzo and Carlo Revello, two young, passionate growers in La Morra who embody the artisan spirit that is so alive in these hills. The winery itself is located in the Annunziata part of La Morra and offers beautiful views of the surrounding vineyards. The 2005 Barolos clearly show the importance of vineyard exposure and microclimate in this vintage. Most of the single-vineyard wines see 50% new oak with the exception of the Gattera, which is aged in a medium-sized cask.
