The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Aux Communes was a little perplexing when I tasted it last year from barrel. Now bottled, it has developed an unassuming, light bouquet of red berry fruit laced with rose petal; the 2019 seems to have more drive. The palate of the 2018 is crunchy and structured on the entry, but it has put on more weight in recent months and there is greater grip on the finish.

Less expressive and darker-fruited than the Pommard on the nose. A slight herbal note even though this is 100% destemmed. Spicy and elegantly dry on the palate. Another lovely wine from this Thibaut Marion – they are all distinctive and yet have a family likeness in restraint with no lack of pure fruit. Chalky dry finish, perhaps a little less fruit on the mid palate than in the Pommard. But I think the tannins will become wonderfully silky in time. Real persistence. (JH)
The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Aux Communes is de-stemmed, whereas previous vintages included some whole cluster. It has an airy, light bouquet of red cherries and bergamot. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine bead of acidity and good tension, but it just misses some weight and complexity toward the finish.
