Tasted from a mini sample bottle. Pungent! As punchy and tropical and spiced as rich rum. Really fiery! This is a sailor's Madeira. Full of swagger and salt, smoke and heave-ho. Gloriously brazen. I'd pair this with a campfire on the beach on a cold night. (TC)

The 1980 Boal, which was bottled in 2016, does not deliver the same vigor as the 1988, and the bouquet needs to put more effort in. The palate is better, offering notes of burnt honey, lemongrass, curry leaf and orange peel. It feels a little lighter than the 1988, although it is more conservative by comparison. Fine.
