The 2015 Amarone della Valpolicella is surprisingly fresh and floral, with dusty cherry and plum complemented by mint and tobacco leaves. This is a suave and sexy style, as silken textures give way to fleshy ripe red and black fruits, with cocoa and autumnal spices resonating throughout. The 2015 is potent yet remarkably fresh and showy. It stains the palate in concentration and, while structured, it is simply delicious today. A minute goes by, and sweet herbs and violet candies still remain.

Pouring from the bottle with a beautifully dark and concentrated appearance, the Roccolo Grassi 2015 Amarone della Valpolicella (made with 65% Corvina, 15% Corvinone, 15% Rondinella and 5% Croatina) is super rich and ripe with syrupy aromas of cherry liqueur, pressed blackberry and crème de cassis. Production is 10,300 bottles, and 80% of the wine is aged in barrique, of which 20% is new. The rest goes into botte grande. The sticky ripeness is what stands out most, and this is a wine that will appeal to those who love the heft and power (with a whopping 17% alcohol content) in their Amarone. It's a lot to take in.

The 2015 Amarone della Valpolicella is dark, rich and deeply alluring but with an energy that keeps you coming back to the glass. The bouquet draws you in with a mix of cherry and plum sauce, notes of sage, tobacco and hints of woodsmoke. It’s velvety-smooth, energized by vibrant acids with sweet red fruits and spices, yet it never crosses the line of becoming cloying or tiring. The balance here is remarkable, as the 2015 comes across as delicious and spry in spite of its girth and intensity. There’s a subtle coating of fine tannin and hints of bitter chocolate that linger throughout the finale, promising many years of development. The term that comes to mind is “Rock Star Wine.''
