The 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes (Domaine Louis Jadot) opens in the glass with notes of cherries, red berries, orange rind, raw cocoa and spices. Medium to full-bodied, ample and lively, this was also promisingly tightly wound when I visited, revealing a bright spine of acidity and chalky tannins that will flesh out with further élevage.

The 2019 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru has a precocious bouquet featuring ample red cherries, kirsch and light balsamic aromas, hints of potpourri emerging with time. The palate is sweet on the entry, offering candied red fruit laced with orange zest and vanilla pod. There remains some new oak to be integrated, though this possesses a lovely silky mouthfeel and shows tenderness on the aftertaste. Very fine.
From a recently purchased plot. Cask sample. Bright, quite deep garnet. Heady nose that does speak of the vineyard. Lots of appeal on the nose with everything nicely settled in place. Although on the palate the acidity (much more than the tannin) is quite noticeable. I’d keep this quite a while. For the moment the nose and palate are out of sync, with the nose apparently much more advanced. (JR)

Louis Jadot is arguably the most consistent négociant house in Burgundy. It has managed to straddle both the entry-level and fine wine market, while retaining respect in both.
