The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Village was completely de-stemmed this year. The dark cherry and cranberry bouquet is pure and well-defined. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, offering black cherries and a hint of cassis, plus a touch of orange peel on the finish. Fine, although it is not the very best Village Cru from the appellation.

The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Village offers up aromas of plumy fruit that mingle with French roast, spices and toasty new oak. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, sappy and open-knit, concluding with a saline, oak-inflected finish. This was quite marked by its time in barrel when I tasted it, but it should provide good near-term drinking.

The only blend among his wines, from 11 different vineyards and including 5% premier cru. Mainly clay soil at the bottom of the slope. 350-litre casks for the most part. Coopers like him and he orders barrels that have the opening low down on the head so that he can get 95% of the wine from the barrel when racking. And he knows the barrels were made specifically for him as it’s more difficult (has to be cut by hand not by machine). Smoky and a touch toasty but with gorgeously seductive red fruits. Spicily sweet, cool and fresh. The tannins are already silky and so fine. Slightly charry now but the fruit is all there. (JH)
