The 2018 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru initially has quite a rambunctious nose with feisty blood orange and cherry liqueur. With aeration, it seems to fall apart and becomes quite disjointed and slightly volatile. The palate is medium-bodied with strict tannins. It seems to compensate for the wild nose but it is too linear and perhaps just lacks the flesh to keep it balanced. A wine that doesn't know what it wants to be...at least at this moment. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

The 2018 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru has an intriguing bouquet of dark cherries, bergamot and cassis, retaining the opulent aromatics that I noted last year. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, and quite closed at the moment, with a mineral-driven finish. This will certainly need 4–5 years to open, but there is good potential for this sturdy Clos Vougeot.
