Limpid yellow. Pear nectar, peach, tangerine, vanilla and honey on the nose, which shows impressive clarity and mineral lift. Fleshy, oak-tinged citrus, orchard fruit and honeydew flavors are braced by a spine of juicy acidity that adds back-end cut. In a generous but lively style, showing impressive energy on a broad, clinging finish that features repeating orchard fruit and vanilla notes.

Grey silty loam at 140 m. Unknown clone plus 95 and 548 – all unirrigated. Hand-picked fruit spent a night in the chiller before whole-bunch pressing and 24 hours' settling. Fermented in puncheons and barriques (30% new oak). Mix of ambient and cultured yeast ('TXL to add freshness'). 15% fermented in ceramic egg with 100% malo but malo was suppressed for the rest. Aged for 10 months. Winemaker Sarah has been freshening up the Chardonnay here. Quite a broad, emphatic nose. Then a mix of green fruit and some leafiness with quite marked acidity. Very youthful and not nearly settled down – so much so that it's quite difficult to read at the moment. It's obviously been made with a lot of ambition. (JR)

55% Clone 95. Planted in 2012 in response to phylloxera. Pale greenish straw. Very tight and youthful. Masses of acidity (none added in 2018 because of yields). A bit austere. Very different from the rounder 2017. Very dry and unyielding on the end. (JR)
