Sorgente means "spring" in Italian, and this wine did indeed make the jump a few years back from Rosso di Montalcino status to Brunello (although the wine name is inspired by a nearby water source). The Salicutti 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Sorgente is firm and compact, and it shows an etched and highly linear style that suits it quite well. This elegant wine offers wild berry and floral nuances as well as a sharper mineral note at the back. This vintage is lean on the palate, but the focus is on freshness more than it is power. Sorgente has made important strides forward in quality these past two years. Closed with a black wax capsule, only 2,714 bottles were released.

Just mid ruby with orange tinges. Rich nose with top notes of sweet baking spice. Ripe and generous cherry fruit palate that is not the most complex and with ripe tannins adding grip on the ripe fruit finish. Can be approached now. (WS)

The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Sorgente is dark and brooding at first, as crushed stone and hints of underbrush give way to black currant, plum skins and violet nuances. It’s round and jovial in feel, with bright acidity motivating its vivid cherry-berry fruits, as sweet spices collect under an air of pretty inner florals. Energy remains remarkably high throughout the long finale, balancing rounded tannins with hints of sour citrus and tart wildberries. While I’ll miss the Rosso from the Sorgente vineyard, I can’t argue with the decision to age and bottle this as Brunello. The 2017 is a total success, transcending the warm and dry conditions of the vintage.
