The 2016 Saint Joseph Les Grisières was completely destemmed (Perret didn’t like the stems in 2016) and offers a medium-bodied, elegant, layered style as well as a classic Northern Rhône Syrah perfume of red and black fruits, bacon fat, game, and white flowers. It shows the elegant, seamless style of this domaine brilliantly and is gorgeous drink. Based just south of the town of Condrieu, Andre Perret continues to fashion some of the most profound Condrieu out there. In addition to his top single vineyards, don’t overlook his base Condrieu as it offers incredible quality and classic characteristics year in, year out. In addition to the Condrieu, he makes two elegant Saint Josephs that are closer in style to a Côte Rôtie than a Saint Joseph from the southern part of the appellation.

The 2016 Saint Joseph les Grisieres comes from old vines (60+ years of age). It's a dark, brooding sort of Saint Joseph, with lots of savory black olive and roasted meat notes. Medium to full-bodied, it's richer and more concentrated than the regular bottling but still approachable on release.

Lurid violet. An exotically perfumed bouquet evokes pungent flowers, candied blue fruits, spicecake and Asian spices. Sweet, densely packed and precise on the palate, offering intense blueberry, cassis, allspice and violet pastille flavors braced by a core of juicy acidity. Seamlessly blends power and finesse and finishes impressively long and spicy; harmonious tannins add frame and gentle grip.

Light nose with confected blackberry fruit, obvious oak spice and a slightly bitter finish. The oak stands apart from the fruit on the finish. (RH)
