Light cherry red. That sour, tangy red fruit on the nose with the wildness of rose hip not the sweetness of strawberry. A little more fruit sweetness on the palate, merest hint of vanilla. Pure, light-bodied and finely textured. Pure fruit pleasure. (JH)

The 2017 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Lavières 1er Cru is back after being frosted over in 2016, although there is a little less in terms of quantity since 0.75 hectares was pulled up for replanting. It has a slightly muted bouquet at first, featuring cranberry, crushed strawberry and a light marine scent. The palate is well balanced and very elegant, with a fine bead of acidity and a silky-smooth, easygoing finish that suggests it will constitute fine early drinking.
