Score 88+/100 · Drink 2022-2030, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Mar 2017

Bright, dark red. Reticent black cherry and licorice aromas. In a denser but also tougher style than the Les Angles, showing very good concentration but little early sweetness. Communicates an impression of medicinal reserve, with the wine's mouth-clenching tannins giving the back end a distinctly rough quality. If this wine ever comes around, it won't be for a while. Production was cut by 60% due to hail in 2014.

(60% hail loss):Bright, dark, saturated red. Aromas of black cherry and licorice accented by peppery herbs. Tightly wound and a bit dry-edged; fresher and more precise than Les Angles but a distinctly tougher wine, finishing with granular tannins that reach the front teeth. These 60+-year-old vines always produce structured wine, notes Boillot, but I find this rather peppery and dry.

The 2014 Volnay 1Er Cru les Brouillards has a mixture of red and black fruit, wilted violets developing in the glass, quite refined and yet gaining intensity all the time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit. There is a touch of rusticity here, a little ferrous towards the finish, although it has commendable substance and length.

The 2014 Volnay Les Brouillards 1er Cru has an impactful, perhaps rather rustic bouquet, with black fruit laced with tar and licorice. It is a little Mediterranean in style. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly dry tannins. Maybe some Brettanomyces are here, just smudging the fruit clarity on the sauvage finish.
